the morning south africa time. early reports indicate may have been an accident. mistake steenkamp as a burglar. talked with neighbors to have claimed to have heard shouting overnight. unclear whether that was around the time of the shooting or earlier. police did say they responded to previous incidents but did not give further information. first court appearance was postponed to tomorrow. so investigators can finish their work. >> thank you. >> police in california say they did not set the fire that engulfed the cabin where christopher dorner believed to have barricaded himself. the san bernardino county sheriff's

office says they tossed tear gas and burst into flames. they are waiting the results of forensic test to determine if the body inside the cabin was that of dorner. >> tony, a developing story in northern virginia leaves police and a community searching for answers. the death of a 94-year-old man found dead inside his home is being called suspicious. melanie alnwick is live in alexandria. other crimes have been reported right? >> reporter: that's right. not just in the area but specifically at this home. one of the residents in this home, an adult male went to the city council march 2011, so almost two years ago saying that crime has come to they neighborhood complaining that his house had been burglarized twice. his car broken into at least once in recent months. that was again two years ago. police reports that i found show large amounts

of cash were taken as well as collectible coins and jewelry and now it appears police are investigating yet another burglary at this house. it was shortly before 7:00 last night when an adult resident came home and found the 94-year-old elderly man dead alone in the house. police would only say he had upper body trauma but did not elaborate on what that means. sources tell fox 5 the person who found the man dead was adult son or stepson. and at this point they are calling it just a death investigation. >> investigating the facts surrounding the death with you we do feel it appears to be somewhat suspicious. >> i'm out here walking my dogs. i have no idea. i didn't know. that's a little scary. >> police have not put out any information about a possible suspect. i can tell you one of the neighbors confirmed to us there was yet another break in at this house last november.

no details on the police report there in terms of what was taken and the circumstances that happened there. the man who was talking to the city council back in march of 2011 said that at the time they were not going to be an easy mark any more. we did see there are alarm signs out here. don't know if those alarms were set. they believe the and you say expect got in through an upper window that was unlocked. hard to say why this particular house has been broken into so many times or if people just know there are elderly people that live there and items that can be taken. certainly, a lot more questions we would like to get answered later today. back to you. >> melanie alnwick live for us. thank you. also developing today lawyers in the levy case will be back in court. some people and journalists will be let into the courtroom only. they won't be

able to hear from the lawyers and the judge are saying. white noise machine will keep the audience from hearing the conversations. >> allison, happening today, a huge airline merger, a deal between american airlines and u.s. airways was announced this morning. creates the biggest airline in the world and should help american airlines at reagan national airport. but there are concerns that smaller cities could lose service. earlier this morning we spoke with aviation analyst derek jenkins. >> the only ones who do service are major airlines. south airlines flies in the no small cities. jet blue and spirit fly into a few. it's always been the major carriers that do smaller city service. it's a very big deal as american airlines will have a greater

presence at reagan national. >> travellers won't notice immediate changes. likely to be months before the two airlines are fully integrated. the situation on the stranded cruise liner in the gulf of mexico is going from worse to unbelievable. we are hearing horror stories from the more than 3,000 passengers. two moms with daughters age 10 and 12 say they called home crying hysterically. >> i do not know there are words that can describe the horror and the pain that i feel not being able to talk to my daughter. i haven't talked to her since monday. and that phone call on monday was the most heart wrenching conversation i've ever had with anyone in my life. i don't know if we can make anybody feel how we're feeling not being able to talk to your child or help your child when she's doing that mommy please just help me. come get me. and you can't. you can't do it.

everyday if you are trying to stay in shape or lose a few pounds? that's what some researchers looked into. a new study showed an lesurly approach. for more on understanding this we turn to shelly. you also work among other things the bariactric program. >> correct. >> this caught our eye when we saw it. a lot of people believe if you are in the gym more, what's your reaction? >> this is something actually not very new. this is something that you would see that it's basically everything in moderation. and you know, if you are exercising six days a week you could be on the verge of over training. when you are

over training, your body doesn't have a chance to recover after you exercise. your muscles need to rebuild. it doesn't have adequate rest and there are a lot of signs and symptoms with the over training you can recognize. and some of these are -- >> i think we have them at home. if we can show that listing there. here we go. you can start to talk about it in general. washed out and tired. sore muscles. >> one of the key things a lot of people see. they are not exercising at optimal speed. they realize their heart rate is a lot higher at rest. realize at their peak points, the herat. so you start to feel tired and very sore and all of this can lead to your muscles are just tired and

your body is tired and you need to rest. >> you shouldn't feel that way. >> there are more signs of over training if we want to go to the next full screen. exercise and resting heart rate. loss of enthusiasm. a lot of people are saying that's not hard. and moodiness and irritability. your body is just what? >> it's breaking down is what's going on. it's an increase in cortizol in your body. when you have too much then it can start breaking down your muscles. you recognize these signs and symptoms and go ahead and start going into rest. that's why in the study it says that four days a week is the most optimal. >> let's talk about more workout myths here. one of them is you can't spot reduce. i thought that was interesting.

and then also the other that i really was like really is that you can't just walk everyday and think you are going to lose a bunch of weight either. weight training makes you big and bulky. eat less to lose weight. >> spot reducing myth is this: basically you can't lose weight from a certain part of the body. if you are trying to get rid of your arms, you can't just do a bunch of exercises and think that's going to go away. your body needs to work throughout when it's losing weight. you can tone muscles and everything and that's what you want to do. but you can't spot reduce. >> so you really can't? >> no. >> some people say do you just take 45 minute brisk walk everyday, that's going to help you lose weight. what will it do and what do you need to add? >> you know what, a 45 minute brisk walk will help. the brisk is the point there.

it's the slow walk is the thing. make sure you are increasing your heart rate to an optimal amount. and there's formulas out there you can use to make sure you are in that training zone. >> we showed -- i know i'm out of time. let me see those cliches. you are just pretending, no pain, no gain. they are just cliches. >> they are. >> maintainly the thing is four days a week. >> you get your cardio, strength training and make sure you are changing your workout. that helps a lot. >> easy to see why you are the expert. thanks for coming in today. exercise physiologist. tony, over to you . four days a week. i think we can do that. >> thank you both. metro weighs in on a possible location

monitoring metro this morning, efforts are underway to convince the fbi to move headquarters to prince georges county. 78 acres at greenbelt station for the facility housed at the j edgar hoover building. a vote is expected today. >> speaking of metro, the board has several other big issues including wednesday morning's incident where a man placed himself in the path of a yellow line train and was killed. the board will also get an update

cracking open the buzz win with a look at some of the valentine's day movies. opening in theaters today -- hold on. i got to do something here to make this right. opening in theaters today, a good day to die hard starring bruce willis. this is the 5th film in the series. great action but poor dialogue. he gives it 3 out of 5 stars. another box office option is beautiful creatures. it's a love story between a teenage boy

and a witch. the film has good acting but seemed too long and advises against dating a witch. he also gave it 3 stars. safe haven starring julian huff. kevin gave it 2.5 stars but says it is the best sparks adaptation since the notebook. >> bad news for lady gaga fans. mother monster canceled the rest of her born this way ball tour. tear in her right hip that needs surgery. she hid her condition from her staff hoping it would get better. ticket holders would receive full refunds. ticket master is making it easier for you and your friends to purchase tickets together. like me and you with beyonce. tickets can be transferred to friends or family at no charge. hopes this will eliminate a hassle for waiting outside a venue for people as well as the

everybody needs a little love right? so this valentine's day why not show a little love to your plants. they've had a hard winter too. derek thomas with thomas landscape talked with sarah simmons about what you should be doing now to help your plants get ready for seasonal changes ahead. >> well, you know it is late winter and that time a year where you are not focusing on outdoor plants but thinking about plants on the inside maybe inside your house you should be thinking about. and derek thomas with thomas landscapes is here to talk to us. thank you for coming in. >> absolutely. this is a time of year where we have those

duldrems. not much is really happening outside. there's the hint that something's about to happen. >> and our green thumb needs to do something. >> may be reponding an old plant or treating yourself to a new friend. it's a great time to go into a plant store or a nursery and check out what they have in doors. check yourself out to a new plant that's going to add a pop. depending on the plant you pick out, this little one will help to add vibrant see to the indoors. you can think about things like if you want color, you can do orchids. they will rebloom for you. african violets which are fun. and the evergreen plant like the snake plant or this one is called a chinese evergreen. now, the thing about it is where a lot of

people do fail with houseplants is that the care is pretty simple. pretty simple things. when you do get a new plant, if you start to see some of the lower leaves turn yellow, don't panic. what the plant is doing is acclimating to your new less than perfect environment. it's come from a greenhouse most of the time. give it time to acclimate. people will bring it home, put it where they want it, make sure it's getting enough light. >> do you want direct light snz. >> depends on the plant. this plant will be able to live in low light. all of these plants are very easy to grow. but you put this in that spot and starts to lose leaves. what a person is inclined to do is move the plant to another spot. or add more water. and what that's going to do, you don't want to over water the plant. you want to give the plant a

couple weeks to acclimate. if you do have a saucer like this so you are not getting water all over, don't let the plant sit in that water for more than 24 hours. if the access water, get rid of it. you can sour the soil. >> if you do want to repot, there are specific soils. african violets like a house mixture. and your orchids like dark and char colonel. you can use a water soluble plant food. this is a leaf shine that will give it shine. and the other thing to keep in mind is just because a plant looks like a plant, you may have similarities, these primroses are going to do well in doors for just a week or two and then planted outside.

the african violet which looks like the primrose will last for years in doors. and the last tip, when repotting, if you've got a plant that's like this and you figure oh, i'm going to save myself time, don't do that. >> why not? >> you only want to go up by two inches. putting it into a large pot, there won't be any roots in the base and the soil is going to sour and the plant will die. go up by the next size up. don't go from small to huge. >> okay. gotcha. it's the time of year you can have great plants in doors. and check me out on twitter@thomasgardenguy. >> okay. thanks. >> this weekend your family can celebrate family engineering day. >> and learning about the contributions of african

application of modern communications computer and control systems to the electric grid. it's our wholly electricity delivery system to where it's being used is our electric grid. >> what are we learning from this? >> basically this would be something similar to what a power engineer would be monitoring. they have to make sure that the demand for electricity meets the supply of energy. there can't be an overload or under load. >> casey has this smart phone in her hand for what reason? >> because if alexander graham we will were to come back today, he would not recognize or know what to do with this modern smart phone which is basically a computer. however, thomas edison who we mentioned earlier, if he were to come back today, he developed the first power generating plant in like the 1880s in lower manhattan. if he were to come back today, he would see it's basically the
